Lowry welcomes €460 million euro investment development in North Tipperary

27th October 2009

Independent TD Michael Lowry issued a warm welcome the news that Thurles native Richard Quirke is to launch an ambitious project that will make North Tipperary a cultural, sporting and leisure hub for the country and Europe as a whole.

The new multi million euro development, to be named the Tipperary Venue, when complete will include:

- an all weather racetrack, sprint track and a national hunt track.

- a greyhound track with a multiuse stadium for 7,000 people

- a reconstruction of the White House, which will serve as a 500 room 5 star hotel with a casino.

- a 15,000 seater underground entertainment venue, with a retractable roof that will be bigger than Dublin’s O2

- an 18 hole golf course

- an equestrian center.

The project is envisaged to take 3 years to build with a construction workforce of around 1,000, with a further 2,000 jobs to be created on the site thereafter.

The news of the project has received to strong backing of industry leaders including Horse Racing Ireland and the Greyhound Board.

Speaking at the launch of the project in the heart of his home constituency, Independent TD for Tipperary North said:

“This pioneering development is the most ambitious project taken in recent times. This is an extraordinary and exceptional project. It is an exciting and unique project with enormous potential. After a year that has seen the loss of almost 16,000 jobs in the mid-west region alone, this development is a vital lifeline to the economy of North Tipperary.”

Lowry stated:

“In these times of economic challenge, our country needs business men like Richard Quirke. He is to be complimented on his ambition, vision, innovation and having the strength and courage to commission this massive development.”

“It is inevitable that this development, because of it’s size and capacity will bring enormous financial benefits to Thurles town and all towns and villages on routes to Two-Mile-Borris. The spin off is widespread.”
